Rural Barn Conversions - Class Q 2020 update

The right to convert agricultural buildings into dwellings without Rural Barn Conversions - barnplanning permission has been around since 2014 but has always been complicated.
Permitted development allows development to take place without planning permission provided it is within limits prescribed by the Government. The point was originally to allow minor development to go ahead without having to go through the planning application process but , in the interest of simplifying the planning system and provide more houses, the government extended rights to include the change of agricultural buildings to dwellings. Originally a temporary measure, this is now permanent.
To use these rights an application must be made to the Local Planning authority to confirm that the development proposed fits within the limit. This requires an application, a set of drawings and a supporting letter or report but much less than a full planning application would require.
Since the right was introduced there have been some key decisions which have altered and clarified how Class Q applications Rural Barn Conversions - barnshould considered. The result is guidance on; ‘what amounts to conversion’ and ‘establishing a fallback position’ which has helped in making it less complicated, in some ways.
This means it is now possible to obtain a full planning permission on applications for the conversion of modern buildings where they were generally resisted.  This has a number of benefits not least extending the amount of time you have to build your new home, but it also opens possibilities to explore much more sustainable options that can be built into the fabric of the building, dramatically reducing the costs.
